Washington put its official cap on the basketball season Wednesday night during its annual awards banquet in the Don James Center.

There were no surprises, though it was a chance for Isaiah Thomas to address the crowd for the first time since deciding to enter the NBA draft.

Thomas was named team MVP and Playmaker of the Year.

Darnell Gant received the Hec Edmundson Most Inspirational Award. Matthew Bryan-Amaning took home the Marv Harshman Trophy, which goes to the top rebounder.

Justin Holiday received the Wurster Award, which goes to the top hustler. The John Meyers Defensive Player award was shared by Bryan-Amaning and Holiday.

Scott Suggs was named most improved. Aziz N’Diaye was the Industrial Award recipient which goes to the hardest worker.

Brendan Sherrer and N’Diaye shared the 101 Scholar Athlete Award.

C.J. Wilcox and Terrence Ross shared the Coaches’ Award.

Sherrer received the Brandon West Walk-on Award.

Washington finished 24-11 after losing to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies lose four players from that team.

The Seattle Times listed 11 awards. There are 13 players on the roster. Did the 2 who didn’t win awards get ‘participant’ medals?

“The notion of the Mariners being in the market for hitters such as Prince Fielder is foolish.” -Art Thiel

I agree with that. Every time I hear some Seattle radio host pushing for Fielder it makes me cringe. As the kids say, “Child, please…”

Hey, so far 2 wins for the M’s in the Yankees series. Even if the M’s lose today, this season has taken on a whole different vibe. This team isn’t “easy listening” any more. It’s got a beat. A heartbeat. And it’s booming, baby.
