Toronto is the last team the Mariners will face in 2012 that is not in contention for a playoff berth. The Mariners and Blue Jays start a three-game set Tuesday.
GAME: Mariners (67-73, 4th, AL West, – 16.5 GB) at Blue Jays (64-75, 4th, AL East, – 14.5 GB). GAME #: 142. SERIES: 1st of 3 games. MEETING: 7th (Mariners lead 4-2). WHEN: Tuesday, 4:05 p.m., Rogers Center, Toronto. PROBABLE PITCHERS: RHP Erasmo Ramirez (Seattle, 0-2, 3.69) vs. RHP Brandon Morrow (Toronto, 8-5, 2.94). STREAKS: Mariners L 3; Blue Jays W 4. TV: ROOT Sports, MLB TV. RADIO: ESPN 710 (Seattle), Mariners Radio Network
When the Mariners made their September call-ups, manager Eric Wedge promised that he would make room for Erasmo Ramirez and Hector Noesi to get at least one start each before the end of the season. Ramirez gets his shot Tuesday, when the Mariners open a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Center.
Ramirez might have remained in Seattle’s rotation all season after the club demoted Blake Beavan to AAA Tacoma in June. But in a June 30 game against Boston, Ramirez had to leave with an elbow injury in the third inning. When he recovered, the Mariners sent him to Tacoma, and he remained there until the Mariners recalled him earlier this month.
Raimirez will oppose a familiar figure, Brandon Morrow, Seattle’s first-round draft pick in 2006. Morrow didn’t impress Mariners’ GM Jack Zduriencik, who traded him to Toronto, effectively for Brandon League, now gone. But Morrow has been tough on the Mariners since the trade. A closer look:
MARINERS: RHP Erasmo Ramirez (0-2, 3.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP)
The 22-year-old Ramirez, in his first major league season, will make his fifth start, his first since his recall from AAA Tacoma, and his first against the Blue Jays. Ramirez appeared against Toronto in a relief role April 27 and did not factor in Seattle’s 9-5 victory.
A native of Rivas, Nicaragua, the 5-11, 205-pound Ramirez came to the Mariners in 2007 as an amateur free agent. He began his professional career in 2008 with the Mariners entry in the Venezuelan summer league. He also pitched for the club in 2009, posting an 11-1 record.
That earned him a promotion to Class A Clinton of the Midwest League in 2010, when he went 10-4. Ramirez pitched for AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma in 2011. He went a combined 10-8.
Ramirez made his major league debut April 9, working in relief of Hector Noesi in an 11-9 Texas win over Seattle at Rangers Ballpark. He pitched 3.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits and surrendered a home run. He did not factor in the decision.
After allowing earned runs in each of his first three appearances, he did not allow any in his last four. The Mariners had seen enough to send him down to Tacoma in order to build him back into a starter. When the Mariners had seen enough of Blake Beavans troubles, they farmed him out and recalled Ramirez June 12.
During Ramirez’s June 30 start against Boston, Ramirez suffered a right flexor elbow strain and had to come out of the game. The Mariners subsequently placed him on the 15-day disabled list. When he was healthy enough to pitch, he was sent to Tacoma. In 15 starts for the Rainiers, Ramirez went 6-3, 3.72. Ramirez worked one inning of relief against Oakland Sept. 7.
Ramirez / 2012
BLUE JAYS: RHP Brandon Morrow (8-5, 2.94 ERA, 1.03 WHIP)
The 27-year-old Morrow, in his sixth major league season and third with Toronto, will make his 17th start and second against the Mariners. Morrow blanked Seattle 7-0 at the Rogers Center April 28 and is coming off a no-decision in Toronto’s 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Sept. 5.
A native of Santa Rosa, CA., 6-3, 200-pound Morrow made All-America at the University of California and was a first-round selection (fifth overall pick) by the Seattle Mariners in the 2006 amateur draft.
Morrow began his pro career in the Mariners system at Arizona (Rookie League) in 2006 and advanced to Inland Empire (2006) before making his major league debut April 3, 2007, against Oakland. Morrow pitched 1.0 innings and received a no-decision.
Morrow worked strictly in relief in his first year (60 appearances) and began the transformation into a starting pitcher in 2008. But the Mariners never could figure out whether Morrow was best suited to start or relieve.
In 131 games with Seattle, Morrow made 15 starts. During his time with the Mariners, he went 8-12, 3.96.
On Dec. 23, 2009, the Mariners traded Morrow to the Blue Jays for Johermyn Chavez (minors) and Brandon League. Neither player remains with the Mariners. Morrow has been a full-time starter since the trade. He went 10-7, 4.49 in 2010 and 11-11, 3.79 in 2011.
Morrow spent two months on the disabled list (returned in August) with a torn muscle in his side. He will bring a career record of 37-35, 4.15 ERA into Tuesday’s game at the Rogers Center.
