Rowers with state ties won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Washington will be represented by 11 rowers in London.

Calder is one of the most successful rowers produced by the University of Washington (Class of 2001). In addition to four Olympic appearances, Calder has won three World Championship medals: gold in 2003 in the mens eight, gold in the mens pair at the 1996 World Junior Championships, and bronze in the mens four at the 1994 World Junior Championships in Germany (his first international competition).
OLYMPICS: Won a silver medal in men’s coxless pair along with Scott Fransden in 2008. In 2000, Calder didn’t move out of the heats, and in 2004 his Games ended when his oar accidentally clashed with a South African oar in the men’s pair semi-final, resulting in disqualification.

Crothers will make his Olympic debut in London. He has competed at three senior World Championships, winning silver in the coxed fours in 2006 and bronze in eight in 2011. A four-time World Under-23 Championships team member, Crothers stroked the gold-medal Canadian eight in Belgium in 2006, and was honored with Rowing Canadas 2006 International Achievement Award for that win (he also captured a silver in 2008).

Gibson is making his Olympic debut, having been an alternate in 2008, which gave him Games experience without the pressure of racing. Among all levels of World Championships, he has competed in eight, with an all-time medal count of six (one gold, two silver and three bronze).
CAREER: Gibson is a three-time World Championships medalist at the senior level winning two silvers — one in the coxed fours in 2006 and another in the eight in 2009 — and a bronze in the eight in 2011 . . . At the Under-23 World Championships, won the world title in the eight in 2006 and was honored with teammates Will Crothers and Max Lang with Rowing Canadas 2006 International Achievement Award . . . A native of St. Croix Falls, MN., Kalmoe walked on to the University of Washington rowing program in 2002 and developed into a first-team All-America and a 101 Club Scholar Athlete. During her time with the Huskies, she won a gold medal at the Under-23 World Championships.
OLYMPICS: The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Kalmoe finished fifth in double sculls with partner Ellen Tomek at the 2008 Games.

A native of Peru, Lanzone grew up in Virginia and attended McLean High School, where he began rowing in 1999. Lanzone enrolled at the University of Washington in 2002 and earned three letters before U.S. Rowing invited him to join the national team. He has alternated between four and eight throughout his career and will ride in the eight in London.
OLYMPICS: The 6-foot-4, 214-pound Lanzone finished ninth in four in 2008.

A graduate of Curtis High School who lists University Place as her hometown, Martelli walked on to the Husky rowing program in 2007 and, by 2009, had become a Division 1 All-America. She received degrees in biology and physiology from the UW in 2010, a year after joining the U.S. national team (under-23).

A member of the 2011 World Championships bronze medalist crew in the mens eight, McCabe competed at two Under-23 World Championships winning silver in 2010 (coxless pairs) and fourth in 2009 (coxless fours). McCabe also competed at two World Junior Championships, winning silver in the coxless pairs in 2007 and placing seventh in the coxed pairs in 2006. In 2001, he won the collegiate, Under-23 and Open men’s championships at the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston.

Newlin began his rowing career during his freshman year at Michigan State University when he received a flyer in his dorm room mailbox announcing crew tryouts. After transferring to UW in 2002, Newlin earned three varsity letters from 2003-05, immediately after which U.S. Rowing invited him to join the National Team.
OLYMPICS: The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Newlin placed ninth in the four in 2008.

Whipple reprises her role as coxswain of the women’s eight in the Olympics for the third time. It a job she also held at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics when she won silver and gold medals, respectively. Last month in Lucerne, Whipple steered the American eight to a world record time (5:54.17) as the U.S. won gold at the Samsung Rowing World Cup. Along with the retired Anna Cummins, another former UW rower, Whipple is one of two women with ties to Washington to win rowing medals in consecutive Olympics. She’s now the first rower with state ties to make three Olympic teams.
