Huskies’ Kemp Out 6-8 Weeks With Tear In Knee

The University of Washington athletic department announced Tuesday that forward Shawn Kemp Jr. will miss six to eight weeks after tearing the patella tendon in his right knee. According to UW media relations aide Greg Bell, the sophomore will not require  surgery and could return to the team by Jan. 5, when Washington plays Washington State in its Pac-12 opener.

The Huskies, the defending regular-season conference champions who failed to make the NCAA Tournament, play the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds in the first round of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena. The game will start at 5 p.m. Loyola went 24-9 and finished second to Iona in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference last season. Loyola made the NCAA Tournament and lost to Ohio State in the second round.

Kemp, the 6-foot-9 son of former Seattle Sonics star Shawn Kemp, sustained the injury during an Oct. 29 practice. A subsequent MRI revealed the tear. According to the UW, Kemp Jr. will begin rehabilitation next week.

Kemp played in 28 games last year as a freshman and averaged 6.5 minutes per contest. He shot a team-best 55.2 percent from the field and finished fourth on the club with 16 blocks. He also averaged a team-high 3.5 blocks per 40 minutes.

UW coach Lorenzo Romar said Tuesday that he has settled on four starters for the first game of the regular-season: point guard Abdul Gaddy, forwards C.J. Wilcox and Scott Suggs and center Azia N’Diaye. Romar will select his fifth starter from among sophomore Desmond Simmons, sophomore Martin Bruening and redshirt freshman Jernard Jarreau.

The Huskies will play the second game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic Tuesday against Albany.

My favorite NW sports site displays 2 headline errors recently. Driving my OCD a little crazy.

Yikes! Sorry it took so long for us to catch that. What was the second headline? Was it the “though/through” issue?

        That’s the one.
