Seven players from AAA Tacoma, including two who have not appeared with the club this season, RHP Carson Smith and C Humberto Quintero, were called up Monday by the Mariners on the first day of MLB roster expansion to 40 players. Smith is a rookie reliever and Quintero last played for the Mariners Sept. 21, 2013 against the Angels.
Also recalled: DH Corey Hart, who returned from rehab assignment and was activated from 15-day disabled list; 1B Justin Smoak, OF Stefan Romero, RHP Taijuan Walker, LHP Lucas Luetge.
Smith worked in 39 games for the Rainiers, all in relief, with a 1-3 record and 2.93 ERA in 62.1 innings. Quintero batted .290 in 73 games.
The most notable players not called up: RHP Erasmo Ramirez and DH Jesus Montero. Ramirez had six stints with the Mariners this season, but ended his last one by allowing 10 earned runs Aug. 27 vs. Texas. Montero was placed on the suspended list following his verbal altercation with a team scout last week during a Northwest League game.
OF Michael Saunders, laid low by a virus that caused him to lose 12 pounds, is on a rehab assignment to regain strength.
The Mariners also transferred Willie Bloomquist from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Seattle opened a three-game series at Oakland Monday to start a two-city, seven-game road trip. RHP Chris Young (22-6, 3.17) started for the Mariners opposite RHP Jason Hammel (1-5, 5.77).
