The Mariners Wednesday optioned INF Jesus Montero to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers ahead of the final three-game series against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park Wednesday night. Montero has just two hits in his last 35 at-bats.
In 25 games in his second stint with Seattle this season, the 25-year-old Montero hit .200 (15-for-75) with five runs, five doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs. In his first 14 contests, he hit .325 with four runs, four doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs, but then went into the 2-for-35 dive that punched his ticket back to Tacoma.
In 93 games with Tacoma this season, Montero hit .346 with 64 runs, 17 doubles, six triples, 16 home runs and 75 RBIs with a .938 OPS.
The Mariners send LHP Taijuan Walker (10-7, 4.53) to the mound Wednesday night to face RHP Scott Kazmir (7-9, 2.45). The Mariners are off Thursday and begin a three-game series in Oakland Friday.
