The Mariners Thursday activated lefty reliever Dillon Overston from the paternity list and optioned RHP Chase De Jong to AAA Tacoma to make room on the 25-man roster. Overton was to be available Thursday night when Seattle concludes a four-game series with the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park (5:10 p.m. PT, Root).
Overton went 1-1, 2.75 (6 ER, 19.2 IP) with 16 strikeouts in seven games (two starts) with the Mariners this spring. In 2016, he appeared in seven games (five starts) with the Oakland A’s, posting a 1-3, 11.47 mark. Seattle acquired him from the A’s Jan. 26.
De Jong made his MLB debut in the 13th inning Wednesday night. The last available reliever, he took the loss after putting two runners on and giving up a three-run home run to George Springer.
The Mariners, 0-3 to start a season for the first time since 2004, send LHP Ariel Miranda to the mound to face RHP Joe Musgrove, who has never pitched against Seattle.
Following the Houston series, the Mariners play three against the Angels in Anaheim before returning to Safeco Field for their home opener Monday at 2:10 p.m., also against the Astros.
