The Mariners Wednesday recalled RHP Evan Marshall from AAA Tacoma, reinstated OF Boog Powell to the Rainiers and, to make room on the 40-man roster, outrighted RHP Casey Fien to Tacoma. Marshall will be available to Seattle Wednesday night for the finale in three-game series against the Houston Astros at Safeco Field.
Marshall appeared in one game after being claimed off waivers from Arizona April 4. He was designated for assignment March 28 after posting a 3.38 ERA (2 ER, 5.1 IP) in six Cactus League appearances.
In 15 appearances with Arizona last season, he posted an 8.80 ERA with nine strikeouts in 15 relief appearances. He also went 1-1 with AAA Reno. In parts of three MLB seasons, Marshall is 4-7 with a 4.50 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 85 relief appearances.
Powell, 24, hit .577 in 16 spring training games and has finished serving an 80-game suspension for violating MLB’s drug abuse rules June 23.
In five minor league seasons, he hit .301 with nine home runs and 122 RBIs in 358 games with the Oakland (2012-14), Tampa Bay (2015) and Seattle (2016) organizations. He was selected by Oakland in the 20th round in 2012 out of Orange Coast College.
Fien, 33, was 0-0 with an 11.12 ERA with five strikeouts in five appearances with Seattle this season.
The Mariners (2-7), who lost Tuesday night 7-5, will start RHP Yovani Gallardo opposite RHP Mike Fiers at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday.
