The Mariners, who had Monday off after completing a 1-3 road trip in Oakland Sunday, have optioned INF Mike Freeman to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. The club will make a corresponding roster move Tuesday, probably activating SS Jean Segura from the disabled list, prior to the start of its three-game series in Detroit.
Freeman hit .111 with three runs, one home run and one RBI in eight games with the Mariners after being selected from Tacoma April 11. Freeman was batting .333 in three games with the Rainiers. He was removed from the 40-man roster during spring training when the club acquired RHP Chase De Jong from the Los Angeles Dodgers March 1.
In 13 games with Seattle last season, he hit .385 after being acquired off waivers from Arizona Aug. 1.
In eight minor league seasons, Freeman hit .290 with 18 home runs in 745 career games in the Arizona (2010-16) and Seattle (2016-17) organizations. He was selected by Arizona in the 11th round of the 2010 draft out of Clemson University.
RHP Felix Hernandez (2-1, 3.65) will pitch the series opener at Comerica Park at 4:10 p.m. PT opposite RHP Jordan Zimmerman (1-1, 5.84).
