Nobody Asks But Us: M's & Friday the 13th

Baseball statistics track how teams perform by month and on each day of the week. With the Mariners opening a three-game series on Friday in Cleveland, we were wondering how the Mariners have performed historically in Friday the 13th games.

When the Mariners open a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians on Friday night at Progressive Field, it will mark their first FRIDAY THE 13TH game since FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2010, when they recorded THIRTEEN total bases, despite THIRTEEN ground ball outs, in a 3-2 win over the Tribe, also by Lake Erie.

The Mariners are 9-18 in all FRIDAY THE 13TH games (regular season and postseason) and 1-3 against the Indians in such contests, which, as you might suspect, have generally been very weird affairs:

The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby, a race often called "the greatest two minutes in sports", will be held Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The first leg of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown (followed by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes) is a sporting spectacle of unmatched grandeur, but also one that has had its share of weirdness. Ichiro finished April with 14 multi-hit games, most in Major League Baseball. That included a four-hit game against Detroit on April 19. What is Ichiro's highest total of multi-hit games in a month? And how do you rate Michael Pineda's first month in the major leagues?

We'll tackle Ichiro first. Fourteen obviously isn't bad, but Ichiro has had more in a month many times. In May,2004, en route to 262 hits, Ichiro produced 18 multi-hit games (May is frequently his best batting average month). He also had 17 multi-hit games in August 2004, when he had a franchise-record 56 hits, and 16 multi-hit games in May 2001. Buccaneers select UW's Mason Foster

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected former University of Washington linebacker Mason Foster in the third round (84th overall) of the National Football League Draft. Foster became the second ex-Husky selected in 2011, following Jake Locker, picked in the first round (eighth overall) by the Tennessee Titans on Thursday.

This is the second consecutive year that Washington has had a linebacker taken in the Draft. Last year, Donald Butler went to San Diego in the third round (79th overall). Butler did not stick with the Chargers and did not play in the NFl in 2010.

An Associated Press third-team All-Amercan and a first-team All-Pac-10 choice in 2010, Foster played and started in all 13 UW games at outside linebacker, finishing the regular season as the leading tackler in the conference and No. 2 in the nation at 12.58 per game.READ MORE»

Top 5 List: UW QBs & NFL TD passes

Warren Moon, who left UW in 1978 to launch his professional career in Canada (Edmonton Eskimos), joined the NFL's Houston Oilers in 1984. In a 17-year career, Moon made nine Pro Bowl teams and retired with 291 touchdown passes, still among the top five all time.

Only two other ex-Washington quarterbacks, Mark Brunell and Chris Chandler, threw for more than 100 touchdowns in the NFL. Both also participated in the Pro Bowl.

With all the talk over the past few months about newly ex-Washington quarterback Jake Locker, selected eighth overall by the Tennessee Titans in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, we thought we would take a look at former Husky signal callers, ranked by NFL touchdown passes thrown.

Chandler, twice a Bowl game MVP when he played for the Huskies (1985 Freedom, 1987 Independence) is the only quarterback in NFL history to start for eight different teams.

Seahawks take Alabama OT James Carpenter

The Seattle Seahawks used their first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, No. 25 overall, on 6-5, 300-pound James Carpenter, an offensive guard from the University of Alabma.

Carpenter, a native of Augusta, GA., started all 13 games of the 2010 season and 27 straight games at left tackle during his two-year career at Alabama. He was a first-team All-SEC selection by league coaches and second team pick by the Associated Press.

This is the second straight year that the Seahawks have selected an offensive lineman in the first round. Last year, they took Russell Okung of Oklahoma State with their first pick.

Carpetner made the the watch list for the 2010 Outland Trophy, and was named the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week following his performance in Week Eight at Tennessee. He helped the Crimson Tide rank 22nd nationally in total offense, racking up 444.08 yards per game.

Nobody Asks But Us: Hall of Famers & the draft

The National Football League held its first college draft in 1933. Since then, which team had the best single draft, and has there ever been an instance in which a team selected two future Hall of Fame players in the same draft?

Several teams grabbed two future Hall of Famers in the same body snatch, but it hasn't occurred in quite a while. Back in 1970, the Pittsburgh Steelers, about to launch a mini dynasty, selected quarterback Terry Bradshaw in the first round (First overall) and cornerback Mel Blount in the third round (53rd overall). That gave the Steelers a leg up on winning four Super Bowls over the next decade.

But the best draft, by far, came in 1974, again orchestrated by the Steelers. That year, Pittsburgh selected four players who would go on to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame (and help the Steelers win the last two of the four Super Bowls).READ MORE»

UW Rowing: Men, women & moments

Al Ulbrickson, Dick Erickson, Bob Ernst, 1927-11

The areas most enduring tradition of athletic success is UW rowing, which had three major figures after the death of Hiram Conibear (1917). Ulbricksons crews won six Intercollegiate Rowing Association regattas in the 1930s and 1940s, coached crews that won Olympic gold in 1936 and 1948, and stunned the Russians in Moscow in 1958. Erickson (1968-87) won at Henley and a U.S. national title, and helped found the womens program. Ernst is the only coach to win national titles with mens and womens eights, coached the U.S. women to Olympic gold in 1984, and at the 2007 IRA regatta became the first coach since 1950 to have a mens varsity, junior varsity and frosh crews win gold.

Windermere Cup

Each year since 1987 the University of Washington has hosted an elite field of competitors for the Windermere Cup/Opening Day races on Montlake Cut. The feature races' sponsorship by Windermere Real Estate Inc. draws major national and international crews as part of the traditional opening of yachting season. UW Rowing: By the numbers

1: Number of gold medals that Washington has won in the pair competition at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta. The first and only medal came in 2001 when Jeff Jorgensen and Andy Altman triumphed.

3: Number of UW crews that have won medals in the Olympic Games. In 1936 (Berlin), the eight-oared shell won a gold medal. In 1948 (London), the UW won a gold medal in the mens coxed fours. In 1952 (Helsinki), the UW won a bronze in mens coxed fours.

Rick Porcello (1-2) retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed just four hits and a run over 6.2 innings in beating the Mariners 3-2 in the final game of a three-game series at Safeco Field. Other than Ichiro's two-out, RBI single in the third, the Mariners mustered no offense until the ninth when Adam Kennedy led off with his first home run for Seattle. But after a Michael Saunders double, Milton Bradley andCarlos Peguero fanned, ending the game.
