Given the national stage Sunday night, rookie quarterback Russell Wilson didn’t disappoint, throwing four touchdown passes in leading the Seahawks to a 42-13 romp over the San Francisco 49ers. With the unexpected, lopsided victory, the Seahawks improved to 10-5 overall and 7-0 at CenturyLink Field, and clinched a berth in the NFC playoffs.

Any quarterback who did what Russell Wilson did last week in Toronto -- franchise-record three rushing touchdowns, one touchdown pass, 104.4 passer rating -- would seem to be a shoo-in for NFC Offensive Player of the Week. But Wilson got aced out, despite directing a 50-17 win, by the quarterback the Seahawks will confront Sunday, Colin Kaepernick.

The Seahawks Thursday placed defensive end Jason Jones on injured reserve and signed defensive tackle Hebron Fangupo from the practice squad to the active roster. Seattle also signed wide receiver Bryan Walters to the practice squad to take Fangupo's place.

In a league where the qualitative differences among the middle 25 or so teams can be covered by a postage stamp, the Seahawks and 49ers are two premier teams at the high end that are nearly identical in priorities, purpose and personalities.

Except that San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh is 3-0 over Seattle coach Pete Carroll. Until that record gets a little more balanced, the NFC West series won't ignite into a rivalry.

Peeking through my fingers at the infected blister of the Monday night TV game between Tennessee and the New York Jets, I saw something other than wretched pro football. I saw what Pete Carroll was talking about.

Russell Wilson played only six NFL games the last time the Seahawks faced the San Francisco 49ers (Oct. 18). His inexperience showed as he completed just 9 of 23 passes for 122 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Wilson, who finished that game with a season-low 38.7 passer rating, did not complete a second-half pass until the fourth quarter as San Francisco won, 13-6.

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman's appeal of his potential four-game suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy is scheduled for Friday, ESPN.com reported Monday afternoon. If the league follow previous protocol, the timing of the appeal will allow him to play Sunday against San Francisco, because any suspension is usually handed out by the league early in the week to give teams a chance to prepare for the following game.

The Seahawks try for their fifth win in six games as they head to Toronto to face the Buffalo Bills, who appear bound to miss the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season (league's longest active drought). The Seahawks are one victory away from clinching their first winning season since they went 10-6 in 2007, and coming off their two biggest wins of the year, a 23-17 overtime victory over Chicago at Soldier Field and a record-setting, 58-0 beatdown of the Arizona Cardinals.

The Seahawks Saturday re-signed WR Deon Butler, cut during preseason, to replace Charly Martin. Butler, Seattle's third-round draft choice from Penn State in 2009, will be available for the game Sunday in Toronto against the Buffalo Bills. Martin injured his calf Thursday in practice and was placed on injured reserve.

Ccoach Pete Carroll had some significant injury updates to report Friday, two days ahead of the Seahawks game against the Buffalo Bills at Rogers Center in Toronto. WR Sidney Rice, considered questionable with a sore foot earlier this week, will play, but CB Walter Thurmond, who started against Arizona for the suspended Brandon Browner, won't.

Heading into the game Sunday, the biggest fear among Seahawks fans was how the defense would handle the absence of CB Brandon Browner, who began serving his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy just in time for the arrival of Larry Fitzgerald, one of the game's premier receivers.

Turned out the worry was more overblown than Y2K. Well, at least it was against the woeful Arizona Cardinals, whose offense had regressed to the equivalent of a hand-crank phone in the age of the iPhone.

There are beatdowns, and then there’s what the Seahawks did to the white-flag Arizona Cardinals Sunday. Seattle forced eight turnovers in its 58-0 win, becoming the first team in more than a decade with at least four takeaways on fumbles and four on interceptions in the same game. New Orleans was the last team to do so, in a 34-31 victory at St. Louis in 2001.

Even if the Seahawks hadn't scored an offensive touchdown Sunday, they still would have flattened Arizona 23-0. But since they had five, three from Marshawn Lynch, they pancaked the Cardinals 58-0, the most points and the most lopsided shutout in franchise annals -- one that finally allowed Matt Flynn, a non-entity since Russell Wilson burst on the scene, to get in on the rout.

It's hard to imagine an NFL team performing much worse offensively than the Arizona Cardinals did Sunday in a 7-6 loss to the New York Jets. With quarterback Ryan Lindley making his second career start, the Cardinals tied a franchise record with just five first downs and went 0-for-15 on third-down conversions. Lindley completed 10 of 31 passes for 72 yards and an interception and the Cardinals gained just 22 yards in the second half.
