Looks like it is time for me, and most everyone else, to stop busting on Seattle sports teams. While I did foresee a Mariners win against the Yankees, did I expect that the Bronx Bombers would leave as series losers? No. But who came close to calling the Indy 500 win? Moi! My pick, Graham Rahal, arrived third behind Dan Wheldon and J.R. Hildebrand, the rookie who smashed into the last turn wall, relinquishing a big lead and the win to Wheldon, his second Indy victory.
MLB: Seattle Mariners vs. Orioles (3 games) and Tampa Bay (4), Safeco Field.
PREDICTION: Mariners at .500 (26-26) for Memorial Day, take two of three from the Orioles; enter weekend atop the AL West; Bono visits Rick Rizzs in press box. Rizzs calls him, “Little buddy.”
Northwest native (Ashland, OR.) and Orioles ace Jeremy Guthrie gets a win in front of his family and friends Tuesday before Michael Pineda shuts down Baltimore in a matinee Wednesday. Hernandez gets his sixth win against Tampa Thursday and is seen lip syncing, In the Name of Love, during Saturday’s U2 concert at Qwest Field. M’s and Tampa split the series.
WNBA: Seattle Storm vs. Phoenix Mercury, noon Saturday, KeyArena
PREDICTION: Storm win season opener, deflect talk about a repeat championship; more Bono.
The Storm pick up where they left off following the two-game sweep of the Mercury in the 2010 playoffs en route to the WNBA Championship. Lauren Jackson, last years MVP, starts the season off with a double-double: 25 points and 11 rebounds. Jackson and Sue Bird are seen sneaking out the back door of the Paramount Theater with Bono after Saturdays matinee performance of “Riverdance.”
NHL: Stanley Cup Finals – Boston at Vancouver, games 1 and 2, Wednesday and Saturday
PREDICTION: Canucks take advantage of home ice, 2-0.
I love hockey if only because it offers opportunity to write things like The Sedin Twins and snarl in the same sentence. The Canucks’ pressure offense, led by the leagues best disher, Henrik Sedin, and two of the leagues leading scorers, Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler, exposes Bostons defense, scoring six off of Tim Thomas, the Bruins’ all-world goalie.
MLS: Sounders at Chicago, Saturday
PREDICTION: Sounders take a little momentum from Salt Lake, 2-1
The Sounders (5-4-5) shoot poorly and are defensively inept. Fortunately for them, the Fire (1-4-6) has similar issues, exponentially so. With no established keeper and only one win this season (against Kansas City, the only team below them in the Eastern Conference), the Fire could use the victory. Too bad for them. Seattle is just solid enough all around, home or away, to boss this match.
