Seahawks’ Brock charged in 2010 DUI case

Seahawks defensive players had a good news/bad news day Wednesday. Reserve defensive end Raheem Brock was cited for DUI from an episode on Nov. 13, 2010, and linebacker David Hawthorne was named NFC player of the week.

According to a Seattle Times blog post, Brock is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 21 after he was pulled over just before 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning.

The police report said Brock declined to take field-sobriety tests. He did take a portable breathalyzer, which measured his blood-alcohol content at .133. The legal limit is 0.08.

Brock was stopped on the NE 45th Street overpass above I-5. He was arrested and taken to the University of Washington Police Department.

The report said Brock, a 10-year veteran who played college ball at Temple, asked the officer, “You guys don’t take care of your athletes out here?” The officer said he would be processed like everyone else. Brock was not booked into jail, but taken home.

Brock did not immediately inform the team of his arrest before playing at Arizona the next day, Nov. 14.

Brock has had a single sack this season, his second in Seattle. In 2010, he was second on the team with a career-high nine sacks and 21 quarterback hits. He had a career-high 2.5 sacks against  St. Louis on Jan. 2, 2011. This year, he has backed up Chris Clemons and Red Bryant and shares time with an improving newcomer, Anthony Hargrove.

Hawthorne returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown and shared the team lead with six tackles in a 31-14 victory over the Eagles Thursday.

This is the first time Hawthorne has been honored. He is the second Seahawks defensive player to be selected in the past three weeks after Clemons was the pick following his three-sack, two-forced fumble outing against the Rams in Week 11.

Hawthorne, a third-year starter who leads the Seahawks with 78 tackles, also is the sixth Seahawks linebacker to win the weekly award, but the first since Lofa Tatupu in Week 13 of 2007. Hawthorne was listed as questionable before the game because of a knee injury.

“We didn’t know until the last minute when we had to put in who (on the injury list) was going to be up and down,” coach Pete Carroll said after the game. “He said, ‘Don’t hug me, I’m full of (topical medication) DMSO and I have stuff all over me.’ He was really trying to work it like crazy to get out there, and he shows up with a 77-yard run.
