The Seahawks came to terms Tuesday afternoon with defensive lineman Red Bryant on a five-year deal worth $35 million (ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that approximately $14.5 million is guaranteed.) The Seahawks had made it a priority to re-sign Bryant, one of the most attractive of their 16 original unrestricted free agents.
The Seahawks, who also re-signed LB Heath Farwell Tuesday, have now brought back their top two free agents. Ten days ago, the club signed Marshawn Lynch to a four-year, $31 million deal with $18 million guaranteed.
Seattle drafted Bryant, son-in-law of former team star Jacob Green, in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2008 NFL draft out of Texas A&M. The 6-5, 333-pound Bryant made only seven starts in his first three years with the club, but blossomed last year after the Seahawks switched him from tackle to end.
He made 16 starts, had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and had 32 tackles and a sack. The touchdown occurred Dec. 18 when he picked off a pass and returned it 20 yards for the TD. Besides that touchdown, Bryant’s most notable performance occurred Nov. 27 against the Washington Redskins.
In that game, Bryant blocked two kicks. In the second quarter, he swatted away a Redskins’ field goal try. In the fourth quarter, knocked down a PAT try.
Bryant blocked three field goals and one PAT in 2011.
The Seahawks also re-signed offensive tackle and unrestricted free agent Breno Giacomini to a two-year deal in mid-February. Giacomini stepped in for No. 1 draft pick James Carpenter after Carpenter went on injured reserve.
The Seahawks also let CB Roy Lewis and and G Mike Gibson enter free agency. Both were restricted free agents.
