The franchise had many greats, but from their final years in Seattle there is only one iconic Sonic.
Gary Payton played 14 stellar seasons with the Sonics prior to be traded to Milwaukee along with Desmond Mason for Ray Allen, Ronald “Flip” Murray, Kevin Ollie and a first-round pick that was used to select Luke Ridnour.
Payton’s skills on defense were nearly matched by his oral feats. Before his recent appearance at the Sports Star of the Year Award event, The Glove sat down with Sportspress Northwest’s Art Thiel to talk about life post-ball, and his surprising ambition to next season to coach.
The video was part of a live webcast produced by Vomodo, a technology company that has provided services for ABC, FOX and CBS networks covering breaking news stories and live sports events.

Very engaging interview with a Sonic icon who has his heart in all of the right places; not just as a former athlete but as a representative of local community values, activity, and how one can make a difference. In addition, I was impressed by your sartorial “black tie” adornment for the festivities. Keep up the fantastic local “drilled down” coverage. Great site!
Thanks. The tux is not standard, but we hope our quality content is. Gary seems to be a lot warmer than his playing days. good to see.
Question for you. Is this the legendary PLU athlete?
Class of ’75. It was a very good year… ;)
Great clip Art – good to see Gary.
Gary always gave it 110% no matter what – he was truly a great player, on any team.
I quit my Sonic tickets when he was traded.
