Midfielder Marco Pappa has been called to the Guatemala National Team to train for the 2014 Copa Centroamericana from Sept. 3-13, the Sounders said Monday. Pappa will miss Seattle’s match at Chivas USA Wednesday in Carson, CA., and against Real Salt Lake at CenturyLink Field Sept. 12.
Guatemala begins Group B play Wednesday against El Salvador at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The tournament continues Sept. 7 against Belize at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Group play concludes Sept. 10 against Honduras at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The knockout stage will be held at the Los Angeles Coliseum Sept. 13.
The 26-year-old Pappa has been capped 31 times by the Guatemala National Team, scoring six goals with three assists. He has scored three goals in 15 World Cup qualifiers, including one against the United States in 2012.
Pappa has three goals and three assists in 22 MLS appearances for the Sounders this season, including the game-winning assist in Saturday’s 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.
The Sounders. who lead the Supporters’ Shield race with 48 points (two more than the LA Galaxy) play at Chivas USA at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
