The Mariners Tuesday optioned RHP Mayckol Guaipe, who made his MLB debut Monday night against the New York Yankees, back to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers in order to make room for LHP Mike Montgomery, who makes his big league starting debut Tuesday night at Safeco Field. Both moves were anticipated.
A lefty, the 25-year-old Montgomery went 4-3 with a 3.74 ERA (22 ER, 53.0 IP) in nine starts with Tacoma. He tossed at least six innings in seven of his nine starts, including three starts of seven or more. In five starts in May, Montgomery went 3-1 with a 4.02 ERA (14 ER, 31.1 IP). Montgomery will oppose LHP C.C. Sabathia (2-7, 5.67) in his debut outing.
Guaipe threw 2.1 perfect innings vs. the Yankees in his debut game. He was recalled from Tacoma just prior to the game. In 16 appearances with the Rainiers, he went 0-2 with three saves and a 4.58 ERA (10 ER, 19.2 IP). He struck out 18 and walked three batters.
In nine minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, Guaipe has appeared in 183 games (23-20, 3.60 ERA, 321 SO).
The Mariners Tuesday also reinstated LHP Tyler Olson from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to the Rainiers.
The Mariners take a three-game losing streak into Tuesday night’s game, the second contest of a three-game set. The series concludes Wednesday starting at 12:40 p.m. Tuijuan Walker (2-5, 6.18) will oppose Masahiro Tanaka (2-1, 3.22).
