Robinson Canó of the Mariners was added to the American League All-Star Team Friday as an injury replacement and will join teammate Nelson Cruz in the midsummer classic Tuesday at Marlins Park in Miami (4:30 p.m., FOX). Cano is an All-Star for the eighth time (third with Seattle). This is also the 10th time the Mariners have had multiple position players selected to the game (last: 2014, Canó and Kyle Seager).
Canó becomes the seventh Mariner to make at least three All-Star appearances, joining Ken Griffey Jr. (10), Ichiro Suzuki (10), Edgar Martinez (7), Felix Hernandez (6), Randy Johnson (5) and Alex Rodriguez (4). His eight career selections are tied for the most among 2017 All-Stars with the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina.
Canó, 34, is batting .279 with 17 home runs, 60 RBIs and a .335 on-base percentage in 76 games. Canó was also selected to the All-Star Game in 2006, 2010-14 and 2016.
The Mariners resume their four-game series with the Oakland Athletics Friday at 7:10 p.m. LHP James Paxton (6-3, 2.27) will throw for Seattle opposite LHP Sean Manaea (7-4, 3.75). Seattle (41-46) has lost four in a row and eight consecutive games at Safeco Field.
