Clint Dempsey of the Seattle Sounders Friday was voted the MLS Player of the Week after recording two goals and an assist in a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids Tuesday at Diin Commerce City, CO.
Dempsey put Seattle up early with a sixth-minute strike, converting past Rapids goalkeeper and USMNT teammate Tim Howard on an assist from Joevin Jones. Dempsey helped Will Bruin make it 2-0 in the 30th minute, and sealed the match in the 85th minute with a half-volley from 20 yards out that sailed over Howard and into the back of the net.
Dempsey leads the Sounders with seven goals, in addition to a pair of assists. His second goal against Colorado was his 41st with Seattle, passing Obafemi Martins for second on the club’s all-time list, six behind Fredy Montero’s record of 47.
The Sounders return to action at noon Saturday at CenturyLink Field with an international friendly against German side Eintracht Frankfurt. Seattle returns to MLS play July 19 with the only matchup of the year against D.C. United.
