Foul-Happy Huskies Sneak Past USC People are going to say that UW fought and scrapped and found a way to win 73-67 against USC, but the fact is that they committed silly fouls, missed assignments and and committed an unconscionable number of turnovers, but won anyway — because they are stacked. Frosh Terrence Ross saved UW with a career-high 18 points. Romar’s recruiting won this game. Washington 9-3 (1-0), 1st in Pac-10. Next game Friday @ UCLA.
Nebraska Should Overwhelm Huskies: Fact is, the Husky defense is badly overmatched on the line of scrimmage. They simply do not have BCS conference size, depth or strength. Nebraska ought to be able to run right over the Huskies, just as they did in Seattle in September. But. The Huskies have hope in: 1) Their improved running game. 2) Jake Locker, who’ll presumably go for broke in his final college game. 3) An understandably disinterested Nebraska team, two of whom preferred driving drunk in Lincoln than playing in this game.
New Low for FSN Telecasts: During the Wazzu/UCLA game, FSN digitally inserted an “esurance” logo onto John and Nell Wooden Court, which, in reality, does not contain any advertising. On Mariner telecasts this summer, will they replace Ichiro with “Flo” from those Progressive commercials?
What they’re saying…
“This is one of our greatest wins.” — Lorenzo Romar, post-game on KJR 950.
“We have a tremendous amount of respect for Matt Hasselbeck, but I think when Charlie Whitehurst gets in there, he’s every bit as effective as Matt.” — Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo
“Charlie looked dead-on today. You can tell he’s prepared.” — Seahawks WR Mike Williams
“Everyone please say a small prayer for @ShowtimeTate’s wallet… Tonight is his rookie dinner.” — Seahawks WR Mike Williams, via Twitter
In other news…
At one point he’d scored 31% of UW’s points. Isaiah Thomas was once again held in check by a big defender, in this case USC’s Marcus Simmons. One on hand, Thomas didn’t get many points. On the other, it left a smaller defender to handle the talented Ross.
Husky guard C.J. Wilcox didn’t play with what Bob Rondeau said was an “infection.”
Husky fans came out in droves to the game. “Where are we, Seattle?” a ref told UW’s coaches before tipoff. Fans launched a “Just Like Foot-Ball” chant as the clock wound down. Ha!
Talk about streaky — in Washington State’s 80-71 loss to UCLA last night, the Cougars went on a 15-0 run to take an 11-point lead with 4:46 left in the first half. They then went 8 minutes without a field goal.
In a tuneup game before conference season starts, Gonzaga waxed Lafayette of the Patriot League 83-55.
Jake Locker is the last real man in Seattle, according to The New York Times.
Seahawks S Earl Thomas was named a Pro Bowl alternate. Pretty big accomplishment for a rookie.
The Huskies will wear their all-black uniforms tonight for the Holiday Bowl.
Talk about True Grit: Matt Hasselbeck is still trying to get healthy enough to play Sunday. “He’s going to make a miracle comeback if he can,” says Pete Carroll.
