Putz as leader? Good luck! This is hilarious: Former Mariner J.J. Putz is being counted on to “change the culture” in Arizona. Oh, you mean by constantly griping about the best player on the team? Maybe next time try a little Google action before choosing your leader, D-Backs.
Huskies demolish ASU, but lose Suggs The Dawgs pulled away from Arizona State in the second half, but likely lost resurgent wing Scott Suggs for the big Arizona game Saturday. Suggs suffered an MCL strain. C.J. Wilcox stepped in and shot 6-for-11, so maybe UW won’t miss Suggs after all. Huskies 18-7 (9-4 in Pac-10), 1.5 GB of Arizona. Next game Saturday @ Arizona.
Beware, Doug Mariners first baseman Mike Carp has a new tattoo that includes an image of…a carp! Let’s make sure Carp doesn’t design a tattoo for Doug Fister.
What they’re saying…
“Good teams grow later in the season. We’ve learned these last few weeks to keep our composure when things aren’t going our way. … Just trust in the game plan and stay with it.” — Matthew Bryan-Amaning
“”I said ‘hello.’ Milton said ‘hello’ back, and we left the conversation at that.” — Tacoma News-Tribune reporter Larry Larue, on the scene of unbridled joy attending Milton Bradley’s arrival at Mariners camp
“There was nothing enjoyable about the 2010 season. It got to a point where it was tough to go to work everyday. I caught myself sometimes saying ‘Wow, I’m playing Major League Baseball and I am not happy.’ That’s when you know you’re struggling.” — Ryan Rowland-Smith
“RIP Coach Gilbertson. You touched my life along with thousands of others. We lost a great man, coach, and example of a life well lived.” — Jon Brockman, on the death for former Snohomish coach Keith Gilbertson Sr.
In other news…
The Sounders signed midfield stalwart Osvaldo Alonso through the 2014 season.
Guess what? Arizona is once again a hoops recruiting force. San Diego big man Angelo Chol picked the Wildcats over the Huskies, Kansas, and UNC. This is an out-of-state guy, but are the nightmare days of top-caliber in-state players ditching UW for ‘Zona (Jason Terry, Michael Dickerson) on their way back?
Looks like FOX will retain the rights to televise Pac-12 football and basketball. On the bright side, Commish Larry Scott says that, beginning with the new contract in 2012, all Pac-12 basketball games will be televised.
Mariners manager Eric Wedge says half the bullpen could be made up of non-roster invitees. I actually like this, back-end-of-the bullpen arms are so volatile, they aren’t worth investing lots of money in. Although, with their budget constraints (see Milton Bradley, above) it’s not like the Mariners have a choice.
The Seahawks will get a fifth-rounder as a result of the Josh Wilson trade. So, barring any future dealing, here’s a detailed rundown of the picks the Seahawks have. The Seahawks’ picks (rd/#overall) in summary: 1/#25, 2/#57, 4/#103, 5/#153, 5/#154, 6/#173, 7/#198. (NOTE: Those overall numbers will change, i.e. be pushed down after round three, if compensatory picks are awarded.)
Sounders fans, mark October 4 on your calendars. That’s the day of the U.S. Open Cup Final, when Sounders F.C., should they make it that far, will attempt to become the first three-peaters since the legendary New York Greek-Americans (1967-69). Here’s all the info you could ever want about America’s version of the F.A. Cup.
A vegan triathlete? Brendan Brazier has proven it can be done. He’ll be speaking tonight at Seattle’s Town Hall about how a vegan diet is better for your body, your looks, and the Earth.
The Hornets could end up moving to the Pacific Northwest! To Vancouver, B.C., that is. Ugh ugh ugh.
Bellevue upset No. 1 O’Dea in the Sea-King District playoffs. Bellevue and Seattle Prep will play Saturday for the district championship. Both teams have qualified for state.
The 3A state tournament got one more qualifier as North Central (Spokane) High beat University in a winner-to-state, loser-out game last night.

Dang, I came to really like his play, and his attitude. I kept screaming and posting for the Seahawks to take him, but foolishly, they did not listen to me. He was the perfect long term replacement for Mebane. He was a steal in the fourth. If Turbin wasn’t so great, I would be madder than I am, but no team can get all the good players. I wish Alameda great success in the NFL. I might even root for them in spite of still harboring resentment about the SB.
