#67: Lincecum Gets First Look At Mariners

San Francisco RHP Tim Lincecum, who grew up in the Seattle suburbs and starred at Liberty High and the University of Washington, will take the Safeco Field mound for the first time in his career Saturday night. A two-time Cy Young winner, Lincecum will be trying to stop a personal five-game losing streak, the longest of his career, against a Mariners team that has dropped six in a row after losing 4-2 Friday.

Lincecum will be opposed by Kevin Millwood, returning to the mound for the first time since initiating a combined no-hitter during the first game of this nine-game home stand, which also happens to be the last time the Mariners won a game. A closer look at Saturday’s matchup:

MARINERS: RHP Kevin Millwood (3-5, 3.57 ERA, 1.28 WHIP)

In his 16th major league season and first with the Mariners, Millwood is making his 13th start and first against the Giants. Injured in his last start June 8 (groin), Millwood is coming off a combined no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A native of Gastonia, NC., the 6-4, 230-pound Millwood was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1993 amateur draft.

Millwood made his major league debut July 14, 1997, winning in relief for the Braves against Philadelphia. During his career, Millwood pitched for the Braves (1997-02), Philadelphia (2003-04), Cleveland (2005), Texas (2006-09), Baltimore (2010) and Colorado (2011) before joining the Mariners.

Millwood twice won 18 games in a season, going 18-7 for the 1999 Braves and 18-8 for the 2002 Braves. Millwood led the National League in starts with 35 in 2000, led the NL in shutouts in 2003 with three, led the American League in ERA in 2005 at 2.86, and the AL in losses in 2010 with 16.

Millwood represented Atlanta in the 1999 All-Star Game.

During his American League career, Millwood made 24 starts against the Mariners, posting an 8-13 record with a 4.91 ERA.

Millwood signed with the Mariners Jan. 24 as a free agent, and earned the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong performance during spring training.

Millwood has a career record of 166-145, 4.09 ERA.

• LAST START: June 8 at Safeco Field worked 6.0 innings before departing with a groin injury.  Along with Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2) and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) had the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history, a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers; Millwood struck out six and walked one.

GIANTS RHP Tim Lincecum (2-7, 6.00 ERA, 1.58 WHIP)

The 27-year-old Lincecum, in his sixth major league season, all with the Giants, will be making his 14th start and his first against the Mariners. Lincecum, who has struggled uncharacteristically this season, is coming off a 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers.

A native of the Seattle area, the 5-11, 175-pound Lincecum starred at Renton’s Liberty High School, where he led the school to 2003 state championship, and at the University of Washington, where he became an All-America and a Golden Spikes winner.

The Chicago Cubs  selected Lincecum in the 48th round of the 2003 amateur draft, but he didn’t sign. The Cleveland Indians took him in the 2005 draft, but Lincecum remained at UW.

San Francisco selected Lincecum in the first round (10th pick) of the 2006 draft. Lincecum had a brief minor league career and made his major league debut May 6, 2007 in an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Lincecum did not factor in the decision but allowed five earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.

Lincecum went 7-5 in the 2007 season and became one of baseball’s elite starters in 2008 when he went 18-5, led the National League in winning percentage (.783) and strikeouts (265). He made the All-Star team and captured the Cy Young Award. The Sporting News also named Lincecum its Pitcher of the Year.

Lincecum came back in 2009 with a 15-7 record that included four complete games and two shutouts. He led the National League in strikeouts (261) and won his second Cy Young award.

Lincecum, a four-time All-Star, went 16-10 in 2010, fell to 13-14 last year, and has been way off his game in 2012.

Lincecum has a pair of two-hitters to his credit, one in 2009, the other in 2010, and a 15-strikeout performance July 27, 2009. Lincecum has struck out 11 or more in a game 21 times and has 12 games with 10 strikeouts.

Lincecum has a career record of 71-48, 3.17.

• 2012: Lincecum leads the National League in losses (7) and earned runs allowed (48). Both  wins came back-to-back April 23 and April 28. Lincecum has lost five decisions with two no-decisions since. He has allowed eight earned runs four times this season.

AT SEATTLE (June 15): Helped by homers from Buster Posey and National League hitting leader Melky Cabrera, Ryan Vogelsong won his sixth consecutive decision as the Giants opened a three-game interleague series with a 4-2 win over the Mariners, who lost their sixth in a row. Posey led off the second inning with a solo home run into the second deck of the left field seats, and Cabrera added a two-run shot in the eighth. Both shots came off loser Jason Vargas. Vogelsong took a shutout into the seventh and allowed just two hits before a pair of singles to Dustin Ackley and Miguel Olivo to begin the eighth. Before that, Vogelsong retired 11 straight and given up just a pair of doubles to Jesus Montero and Olivo earlier in the game.

• April 24: Catcher Miguel Olivo matched the franchise record  when he was charged with three passed balls in a 7-4 win at Detroit. Jerry Narron let three balls get by him Oct. 4, 1980, and Jeff Clement did likewise Aug. 10, 2008 (Clement was catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey).

• May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. Millwood’s gem marked only the fourth time in 1,440 games at Coors Field that an opposing pitcher held the Rockies to two hits or less while shutting them out. Millwood’s complete game also was the first by a Mariner in 2012.
• May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
• May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
• June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003).
