Over the past 10 games, Mariners starters have posted a 2.40 ERA (16 ER, 60.0 IP) with 64 strikeouts, numbers that could be enhanced considerably if Felix Hernandez, who starts Tuesday night against Baltimore, pitches to recent form. In his last two starts, Hernandez has fanned 23, walked only two and won twice.
The Mariners, who beat the Orioles Monday night 6-3 thanks largely to a Casper Wells three-run double, will get their first look at Wei-Yin Chen, a lefty making his maiden tour of the American League after a long career in Japan. A closer look:
MARINERS: RHP Felix Hernandez (6-5, 3.09 ERA, 1.22 WHIP)
The 25-year-old Hernandez, in his eighth major league season, all with the Mariners, will be making his 17th start and first against the Orioles. Hernandez is coming off a spectacular 13-strikeout performance in a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox June 28.
A native of Valencia, VZ., the 6-3, 230-pound Hernandez was signed as a non-drafted free agent July 4, 2002 by Seattle scout Bob Engle.
He made his major league debut Aug. 4, 2005, absorbing a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, in a game in which Hernandez allowed one earned run and fanned four. Hernandez is a two-time American League All-Star (2009, 2011) and won the AL Cy Young award in 2010, when he went 13-12 with a 2.27 ERA.
Hernandez has worked into the seventh inning in 12 of his 16 starts and into the eighth inning six times. Hernandez has won his past two starts after not winning in four starts dating to May 21. Hernandez has a career record of 91-72, 3.23.

ORIOLES: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (7-4, 3.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP)
The 26-year-old Chen, in his first season in the major leagues, will make his 16th start and first against the Mariners. Chen is coming off a 7-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians June 28.
A native of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, the 6-0, 195-pound Chen signed with the Orioles as an amateur free agent Jan. 10. Prior to joining the Orioles, Chen pitched for the Chunichi Dragons in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) from 2004-2010.
Chen won the 2009 Central League ERA title with the lowest ERA (1.54) since the 1968 season. Chen had Tommy John surgery at the end of 2006 season.
In addition to his time with Chunichi, Chen pitched for the Chinese Taipei national team in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.
Chen throws a fastball that is usually around 90-92 mph (tops out at 96 mph). The best breaking ball in his repertoire is a mid-80s slider.
Chen made his major league debut April 10 against the New York Yankees at Camden Yards. He received a no-decision after allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out six and walked one and allowed one home run.
- 2012: Chen has worked into the seventh inning in six of his 15 starts. He has his best outing June 17 against Atlanta when he defeated the Braves 2-0, scattering six hits over 6.0 innings. AT SEATTLE (July 2): Casper Wells whacked a go-ahead, three-run double with two outs in the seventh inning to lift the Mariners to a 6-3 win over the slumping Orioles at Safeco Field. Miguel Olivo and Dustin Ackley added back-to-back homers in the eighth inning. Steve Delabar (2-1) worked two innings striking out three, for the win. The loss was Baltimore’s 10th in the past 13 games. Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the third when the unlikely trio of Chone Figgins, Munenori Kawasaki and Brendan Ryan — none of whom entered the night hitting higher than .186 — combined to plate the first run. Figgins singled, moved up on Kawasaki’s sacrifice and scored on Ryan’s siingle. Hasashi Iwakuma made a spot start, his first, with Kevin Millwood nursing a sore groin that has twice forced him to leave starts early in the past month. Iwakuma threw five innings, giving up three runs on three hits.

- May 8: Kevin Millwood’s 2-0 shutout marked his first in nearly nine years. He did not surrender his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth. - May 27: The pinch-hit grand slam allowed by Felix Hernandez to Alberto Callaspo marked just the sixth against the Mariners in 35 years, and the first since May 6, 1988 when Pat Sheridan of Detroit hit one off Mike Jackson.
- May 30: Mariners defeated Texas 21-8, just the third time in franchise history they have scored 20 or more runs in a game. The Mariners, with 20 hits, became the first team since 1880 to score 20 runs in a game in the same season it also go perfect-oed.
- June 8: Kevin Millwood and five relievers collaborated for the 10th combined no-hitter in major league history in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers at Safeco Field. Millwood (6.0), Charlie Furbush (0.2), Stephen Pryor (0.1), Lucas Luetge (0.1), Brandon League (0.2), and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0) tied the MLB record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter (Houston vs. the Yankees June 11, 2003). It marked the third no-hitter in Mariners history.
- June 18: Aaron Hill of Arizona hit for the cycle in the Diamondbacks’ 7-1 win over the Mariners. Hill singled in the first (Hector Noesi), tripled in the third (Noesi), doubled in the fifth (Noesi) and homered in the seventh (Shawn Kelley).
- June 19: Ichiro reached 2,500 hits (first-inning single) in the fourth-fewest games in major league history during a 12-9 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 25-year-old Hernandez, in his eighth major league season, all with the Mariners, will be making his 17th start and first against the Orioles. Hernandez is coming off a spectacular 13-strikeout performance in a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox June 28.
A native of Valencia, VZ., the 6-3, 230-pound Hernandez was signed as a non-drafted free agent July 4, 2002 by Seattle scout Bob Engle.
He made his major league debut Aug. 4, 2005, absorbing a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, in a game in which Hernandez allowed one earned run and fanned four. Hernandez is a two-time American League All-Star (2009, 2011) and won the AL Cy Young award in 2010, when he went 13-12 with a 2.27 ERA.
Hernandez has worked into the seventh inning in 12 of his 16 starts and into the eighth inning six times. Hernandez has won his last two starts after not winning in four starts dating to May 21. Hernandez has a career record of 91-72, 3.23.

ORIOLES: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (7-4, 3.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP)
The 26-year-old Chen, in his first season in the major leagues, will make his 16th start of the season and first against the Mariners. Chen is coming off a 7-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians June 28.
A native of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, the 6-0, 195-pound Chen signed with the Orioles as an amateur free agent Jan. 10, 2012. Prior to joining the Orioles, Chen pitched for the Chunichi Dragons in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) from 2004-2010.
Chen won the 2009 Central League ERA title with the lowest ERA (1.54) since the 1968 season in NPB. Chen had Tommy John surgery at the end of 2006 season.
In addition to his time with Chunichi, Chen pitched for the Chinese Taipei national team in the 2004 (Athens) and 2008 (Beijing) Olympic Games.
Chen throws a fastball that usually sits around 90-92 mph (tops out at 96 mph). The best breaking ball in his repertoire is a mid-80s slider.
Chen made his major league debut April 10 against the New York Yankees at Camden Yards. He received a no-decision after allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out six and walked one and allowed one home run.
