Against Seattle U. Thursday night at KeyArena, the Huskies (5-4) shot a season-high 54.4 percent from the floor and produced a season-best 42 rebounds in an 87-74 victory that marked UW’s best sustained performance in nine games. The question is whether Washington can sustain that effort twice in three days, when it hosts Jackson State.
“We’ve got to come out with the same intensity,” said senior guard Scott Suggs, who had a career-high 24 points against Seattle U. “That’s got to be our standard. That kind of defensive intensity must be our day-in, day-out defense.”
Washington’s task Saturday doesn’t figure to be all that difficult as long as the Huskies don’t sleep walk. Jackson State (MS.) is 0-7 with more than half the losses blowouts of 20 points or more. St. Mary’s (CA.) crushed the Tigers 120-67. Average score of a Jackson State game this season: Foes 82.7, Jackson State 58.3.
Jackson State did, however, give Washington State a brief scare Thursday while the Huskies were disposing of the Redhawks. The Tigers had a two-point lead with 12 minutes to play before Washington State woke up went on a 14-0 run that iced the game.
Jackson State is a member of the Southwest Athletic Conference, which includes Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling, Mississippi Valley, Prairie View, Southern and Texas Southern. Although the Tigers are off to a dreadful start, they have won five SWAC tournament titles since 1978 and most recently in 2007, when they also started 0-7.
Washington is ranked 76th in RPI. Jackson State is ranked 272nd and is 0-1 against RPI Top 100 teams.
The Huskies have a wide statistical edge in two categories. The Huskies shoot 46 percent from the floor and Jackson State 33 percent (Tigers have been outshot in all of their games). Washington averages 72 points per game and Jackson State just 58.
SERIES: Dates to Dec. 4, 1995, when the Huskies whipped the Tigers 92-76 at Hec Edmundson Pavilion in a game in which Mark Sanford scored 35 points (made 11 of 13 shots) and Bryant Boston 19. Just 2,834 fans watched coach Bob Bender’s club improve to 2-0.

- Desmond Simmons ranks 8th (80.6) in free throw percentage and has 43 rebounds over the last three games, including 12 against the Redhawks. His 18 against Fullerton were the most by a Husky since Jon Brockman pulled down 18 March 21, 2009 vs. Purdue in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
- Senior Aziz N’Diaye ranks 3rd in Pac-12 rebounding at 9.6 per game. N’Diaye, who also ranks 1st in offensive rebounds (3.9), is 2nd in field-goal percentage (62.1) and T10 in blocked shots (1.3).
- Washington’s 14-point halftime rally vs. Cal-State Fullerton was the team’s largest comeback at the half since Dec. 29, 2007 at LSU. The Huskies trailed in that game 41-27 and won 74-65.
- Washington finished first in conference rebounding for four straight years and first or second in each of the last eight. So far, UW is 11th in the Pac-12 in rebounding at 35.4 per game, the school’s lowest average since 1995.
UW HEAD COACH: Lorenzo Romar (317-205 overall, 224-117 UW) is coming off a year in which the Huskies won the Pac-12 regular-season title. Romar has taken the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times and won three Pac-10 Tournament titles (2005, 2010, 2011). Romar, who signed a 10-year contract extension in April 2011, won his his 200th game at Washington Dec. 16, 2011. He had his 300th career victory and his 100th as a conference coach on Jan. 21, 2012. Romar was selected the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.
Romar played for the Huskies under head coach Marv Harshman during the 1979-80 seasons (served as team captain his senior year), and had a five-year NBA career with Golden State (1981-84), Milwaukee (1984) and Detroit (1984-85). He became a college head coach at Pepperdine in 1997, where he coached for three seasons, then spent three years (1999-02) at St. Louis University before taking the Washington job in 2002-03.

JACKSON STATE NOTES: The Tigers have lost to Baylor (78-47), Tulsa (86-66), Texas Tech (84-75), Air Force (76-47), North Texas (83-65), St. Mary’s (120-67) and Washington State (52-41). Against the Cougars, Jackson State had a 36-34 lead with 12 minutes to play, but then allowed WSU to go on a 14-0 run to put the game away . . . Dundrecous Nelson scored 13 points, Christian Williams and Kelsey Howard each added eight points for Jackson State. The Tigers shot just 22 percent from the field, 13 of 57. Washington State, shot 40 percent. Jackson State scored 21 points off 19 Cougar turnovers, keeping the Tigers competitive, but had no answer for the inside play of Brock Motum, who scored 27 points.
JACKSON STATE HEAD COACH: Tevester Anderson is in his 10th season as head coach of the Tigers. He has taken Jackson State to two postseason tournaments, 2007 NCAA Tournament and 2010 NIT. A Mississippi native, Jackson began his head coaching career at Murray State in 1998-99 and spent five years there. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Arkansas AM&N, now Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
