Lorenzo Romar’s Washington Huskies continue their quirky Pac-12 schedule Wednesday at California with the third of four consecutive games away from Seattle after playing eight consecutive games in town. The Cal game is also the second of three straight conference road games for UW, marking just the fourth time in 70 years that the Huskies will open league play with three on the road (also, 1943, 1993 and 1999).
The Huskies, coming off a 68-63 win at Washington State in their Pac-12 opener, have started league play 2-0 four times in Romar’s 10 seasons, including the past two years.
In terms of RPI (Ratings Percentage Index), Washington is ranked 73rd vs. California’s 70.
As the Huskies enter their 15th game of the season, they rank eighth in Pac-12 scoring at 70.7 points per game. That’s the lowest average during the Romar era (72.4, 2003) and the lowest since 2001 when Washington averaged 67.6.
“They’ve changed their offense a little bit,” Cal coach Mike Montgomery said of the Huskies during his weekly press conference. “It’s stuff we’ve seen from them before. They’re not exclusively running the motion (offense) they’ve typically run before. Last year of course they had (Tony) Wroten. The ball was in his hands a lot and he created a lot of stuff for people and the high-firing (Terrence) Ross.
“They still have the great shooting wings in (Scott) Suggs and (C.J.) Wilcox. They still got (Aziz) N’Diaye inside, the big monster. So there’s a lot of similarities to what they’ve always done. They’ve just tried to move away from maybe what they’ve done because of depth. They may not have the depth they’ve had.”
Montgomery’s top player is Allen Crabbe, a 6-foot-6 junior forward from Los Angeles who has been Cal’s leading scorer in 10 of the Bears’ 14 games and currently leads the Pac-12 with a 21.4 scoring average. Crabb scored a season-high 33 points against Pepperdine Nov. 13 and twice had 27, including against USC in the Bears’ victory last week. Montgomery said he sees a lot of similarities in Crabbe and Washington’s C.J. Wilcox.
“They have evolved from primarily shooters to guys that can put it on the floor,” he said. They’ve gotten multi-faceted and that’s why they’re putting up big numbers.”
SERIES: Dates to Jan. 4, 1916, when UW (not yet known as Huskies) dropped a 30-24 decision to the Bears in Seattle. Washington has won three of the last four meetings, but California prevailed last time, 69-66 at Alaska Airlines Arena. In that game, Terrence Ross scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime, Aziz N’Diaye had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Tony Wroten added 14 points and five assists.

- Wilcox has scored 20 or more points in seven of his past 10 games. He needs 19 points to become the 37th Husky to score 1,000 career points. Terrence Ross was the last Husky to score 20 or more in four straight. Brandon Roy scored 20-plus in nine straight during the 2006 season.
- Wilcox ranks 3rd in free-throw percentage (86.7) and Suggs is 5th.
- Senior Aziz N’Diaye ranks 4th in Pac-12 rebounding at 9.2 per game. N’Diaye also ranks 1st in offensive rebounds (3.9) and is third (62.6) in field goal percentage. N’Diaye ranks 5th all-time in UW history with a 55.8 field goal percentage and has 11 career double-doubles.
- Washington’s 14-point halftime rally vs. Cal-State Fullerton was the team’s largest comeback at the half since Dec. 29, 2007 at LSU. The Huskies trailed 41-27 and won 74-66.
UW HEAD COACH: Lorenzo Romar (320-206 overall, 227-116 UW) is coming off a year in which the Huskies won the Pac-12 regular-season title. Romar has taken the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times and won three Pac-10 Tournament titles (2005, 2010, 2011). Romar, who signed a 10-year contract extension in April 2011, won his his 200th game at Washington Dec. 16, 2011. He had his 300th career victory and his 100th as a conference coach on Jan. 21, 2012. Romar was selected the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.
Romar played for the Huskies under head coach Marv Harshman during the 1979-80 seasons (served as team captain his senior year), and had a five-year NBA career with Golden State (1981-84), Milwaukee (1984) and Detroit (1984-85). He became a college head coach at Pepperdine in 1997, where he coached for three seasons, then spent three years (1999-02) at St. Louis University before taking the Washington job in 2002-03.

The Bears lost three straight to Wisconsin (81-56), UNLV (76-75) and Creighton (74-64).
