Jesus Montero had a grand slam and drove in six runs as the Mariners routed the Cincinnati Reds 16-0 in a Cactus League contest Monday in Goodyear. Seattle jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings and added five more in the fifth, including Montero’s slam. Montero’s salami was Seattle’s 52nd spring training home run, which broke the club record in 1999.
The Mariners scored three runs in the first, three in the second, four in the fourth, five in the fifth and a single run in the ninth.
Justin Smoak reached base all four times up — he scored three runs — as Seattle battered Cincinnati’s No. 4 starter, Homer Bailey, who allowed nine runs on nine hits.
“It was their day, not mine,” Bailey said.
Seattle rookie starter Joe Maurer, who is looking to skip AAA as he battles for a rotation spot, worked five scoreless innings. He allowed six hits with one walk and fanned seven. His ERA is 0.90 after six spring starts.
“I felt good,” Maurer said. “I felt better than I have in the past. My curveball was working for me today. The changeup was working when I was behind in the count, then the fastball command was there. So it was fun.”
Michael Saunders went 3-for-3 for the Mariners and hit his third home run. Montero had three hits and the Mariners produced 16 hits and seven walks.
Jeremy Bonderman, attempting to land a rotation berth after not pitching in the majors since 2010, gets his last start of the spring Tuesday as the Mariners host the Royals at 1:05 p.m. PT in Peoria Stadium.
Bonderman, a non-roster invitee on a minor league contract, has a 7.20 ERA this spring, but has been pitching better as camp progressed. Danny Farquhar, Charlie Furbush, Tom Wilhelmsen and Kameron Loe are among the relievers available.
NOTES: The Mariners Monday selected the contract of RHP Kameron Loe from AAA Tacoma and added him to the 40-man roster. Loe signed a minor league contract with Seattle Feb. 12. In eight spring training appearances, Loe has a 1-0 record with one save and a 1.80 ERA . . . The Mariners placed RHP Josh Kinney on the 60-day disabled list with a stress reaction in a rib. Kinney has not appeared in a spring training game since March 4.

I for one will be shocked if all of the Ms players whacking the whiz out of the ball this spring all suddenly forget how to do it when the season starts.
