Wide receiver John Ross has been elevated to a starter, the lone freshman so designated by coach Steve Sarkisian, in the Washington Huskies’ depth chart released Saturday after training camp. UW is preparing to begin its season at 7 p.m. next Saturday at renovated Husky Stadium against Boise State.
Ross, a 5-11, 173-pounder from Long Beach, CA., with premier speed, emerged as the best among a trio of highly recruited freshman receivers. Ross is also listed second as a kickoff returner and shares the top punt-return spot with Kasen Williams.
Noteworthy is the Huskies will have only five or six senior starters, depending on who wins a linebacker spot between senior Princeton Fuiamaono sophomore Travis Feeney. Three senior starters are on defense: Safeties Will Shamburger and Sean Parker and CB Gregory Ducre. Two seniors are on offense: Quarterback Keith Price and wide receiver Kevin Smith.
Another senior, kicker Travis Coons, will again handle punt and kickoff duties.
A redshirt freshman, Psalm Wooching, is listed as the starting fullback.
Perhaps the one surprise since spring is at one linebacker spotm where sophomore Cory Littleton (6-2, 230) beat out returning starter Josh Shirley (6-3, 232), a junior.
