Brendan Ryan’s bat just received a jolt — a trade away from the Mariners. The superb-fielding, lousy-hitting shortstop, relegated to the bench behind promising shortstop Brad Miller, was traded Tuesday night to the New York Yankees for a player to be named later. The Mariners tradition of career revival via trade will continue in Yankee Stadium, where he is expected to replace Eduardo Nunez, a shaky fielder who has been the Yankees regular shortstop in the absence of Yankees captain Derek Jeter.
Ryan, 31, will fill the hole created Jeter’s continuing ankle problems. Jeter appeared in 17 games this season and hit .190. Nunez had a throwing error that led to a run in the Yankees’ 7-5 loss to the Orioles Tuesday.
Ryan appeared in 87 games, batting .192 (50×260) with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI. Ryan appeared in 32 games since June 11, hitting .182 over that stretch. He has started 12 games at shortstop since July 1.
Ryan was acquired by Seattle on Dec. 12, 2010. He appeared in 351 games from 2011-2013, hitting a combined .215 (237×1103) with 48 doubles, six triples and nine home runs.
Jeter was removed from a game on Saturday with soreness in the ankle, which was surgically repaired in October but re-fractured during spring training. Officially, the Yankees say Jeter is day to day, but it is unknown when, or if, he will return to the Yankees’ lineup.

The Yankees WON Tuesday, 7-5.
Any trade that got rid of Ryan was a good trade. They could have traded him for snow cones for the team, and it would have been a good trade for the M’s.
Flavored snow cones, or we talking just shaved ice? I can see any flavoring torpedoing this deal. ;)
Good move by the Yankees and for Ryan. He wasn’t going to play here anyways. Hopefully the M’s will get lucky on the player to be named later and get a David Ortiz type.
