The Mariners Thursday signed free agent catcher John Buck to a contract for the 2014 season and made room for him on the 40-man roster by designating outfielder Carlos Peguero for assignment. Seattle now has 10 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Peguero to the minors.
Buck, 33, hit 63 home runs over the last four seasons, fifth-most among major league catchers behind Brian McCann (85), Matt Wieters (78), Carlos Santana (71) and J.P. Arencibia (64). Last season, Buck appeared in 110 games, 101 with the New York Mets and nine with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was traded to Pittsburgh Aug. 27 to join the Pirates for their postseason run.
In 10 major league seasons, Buck has appeared in 1,058 games and slugged 133 home runs. His 1,018 career games behind the plate (973 starts) are fifth-most among active catchers.
Pitchers and catchers report to spring training in Peoria, AZ Feb. 12 and hold their first workout Feb. 13.

Unless he can DH decently it’s probably best to let Peguero go. His opportunities don’t seem to be here.
i hear peguero’s wife is really good at stealing.
Maybe they can trade Peguero to Saks for a credit card to be named later.
M’s continue to collect 33 and 34-year-old catchers, to replace the 40-year-old they had last abominable year. Gawd, I’m jazzed about this season! Aren’t you?
