Seager leads Mariners onslaught in New York

Like an overhand right from a prime-time Mike Tyson, the Mariners laid a quick 10-2 beatdown on the Yankees Monday night in New York before heading to Atlanta for two interleague games with the Braves.

Seattle made the one-game stop over in New York to make up an April 30 rainout and left the Yankees on the canvas. Kyle Seager had himself a career game — 4-for-5 with a homer, two triples and a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Seager’s night made history. He is the first player to hit two triples and at least one home run and one double in a game since Montreal’s Hal Breeden in 1973. He was the first American League player to do so since Hoot Evers accomplished it for Detroit in 1950.

The offensive explosion for Seattle (29-28) came with ace Felix Hernandez on the hill and looking to finish a three-game sweep against the Yankees, carrying over two wins from the abbreviated series that began April 29.

Hernandez improved to 8-1 with a 2.57 ERA by continuing his dominance in the Bronx. Over his career, he has owned Yankee Stadium, this time allowing eight hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked none. His Bronx ERA fell to 2.07 over nine career starts.

Seager opened the second with the first triple. Mike Zunino followed with a hard line drive back up the middle off starter David Phelps to score Seager.

Seager led off the fourth with his second triple when left-fielder Brett Gardner couldn’t come up with a sliding catch near the left-field line. The ball bounced in and out of Gardner’s glove as he slid across the line. The ball was in the air for a pursuing Derek Jeter, but he shortstop couldn’t glove it. The ball kicked away toward the left-field fence.

Thinking the ball was foul, Jeter stopped playing while Seager hustled into third. Two batters later, he scored on a Dustin Ackley ground out for 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, New York knocked around Hernandez with five singles for two runs. Both runs scored when a ricochet off Hernandez from an Ichiro grounder was misplayed by shortstop Brad Miller.

Miller redeemed himself in the seventh, delivering a go-ahead, two-RBI single to center with the bases loaded, giving Seattle the lead for good, 4-2. After James Jones laid down a bunt to move runners to second and third, Michael Saunders hit a single down the right field line for a 6-2 advantage.

In the ninth, Saunders and Seager each hit home runs off Yankees’ reliever Alfredo Aceves.

Seattle heads to Atlanta on a three-game winning streak carrying some hot hitters.

Along with the .325-hitting Robinson Cano, who returned to the lineup Monday after missing four consecutive games with a hand injury, the Mariners have four regulars hitting over .270 in early June: Jones (.281), Saunders (.279) and Seager (.272).

Notes

Cano was 1-for-3 with two walks . . . Hernandez has won five consecutive starts for the first time since 2009 . . . RHP Erasmo Ramirez will make Tuesday’s start. Ramirez is 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA in six starts.
