The Cleveland Browns, who made Washington DT Danny Shelton the No. 12 overall choice in the 2015 NFL draft Thursday, added Washington State defensive tackle Xavier Cooper to their roster Friday with the 96th overall choice in the third round. The 6-foot-3, 293-pound Cooper started 25 games for the Cougars over the past two seasons, posting 23 tackles for loss.
A native of Tacoma and a Wilson High graduate, Cooper appeared in 36 games for WSU, making 34 starts. During his career, he recorded 121 tackles and posted 31.5 tackles-for-loss, eighth-most in school history. He finished his career with 13 sacks, three forced fumbles and had two fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown. Cooper earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors as a redshirt freshman.
Last year, Cooper made 37 tackles, including team-high 9.5 tackles for loss. In the Washington State-Oregon game, Cooper sacked Marcus Mariota 1½ times.
