Manager Lloyd McClendon will miss the Mariners’ three-game series starting Monday at Safeco Field against the Detroit Tigers, his old club prior to coming to Seattle, to attend his sister’s funeral in Indiana. Bench coach Trent Jewett will serve as interim manager until McClendon returns for Thursday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels.
McClendon’s sister, Angela Price, died from health complications Wednesday, according to mariners.mlb.com. She was 44. Price was the youngest of 12 children in McClendon’s family.
The 56-year-old skipper, in his second year with the Mariners, managed Sunday in Oakland. His plan is to fly back to Seattle, then go to Indiana for Price’s services Tuesday.
The four-game series against the Angels takes the Mariners to the All-Star break.
