CB Austin Joyner, one of the most well-regarded members of the University of Washington’s freshman football class, is done for the year after injuring a knee during the opening kickoff of the Huskies’ 49-0 win over Sacramento State Saturday. He was on special teams in UW’s first two games.
The 5-10, 186-pounder from Marysville-Pilchuck High School and USA Today’s state player of the year in 2014, is eligible for a redshirt season.
“Real unfortunate,” said UW coach Chris Petersen at his weekly presser Monday. “He just kind of planted weird running down there on the kickoff. I guess the good news is, he got a game under his belt — we really prepared him like he was planning on playing.
“He’ll use this year as a redshirt year and take it like most college freshmen do and get him dialed into the academics. He’ll have time to rehab and we’ll have a full year to get him back.”
Joyner played both ways at Marysville. As a running back his senior year, he had 1,768 yards and 32 touchdowns. In spring, he won the state 3A long jump championship with a leap of 23 feet, 5½ inches.

At least he can redshirt. Disappointing way to kickoff your freshman season. He’ll be back.
