Six days after being handed a six-month suspension by the U.S. Soccer Federation, Hope Solo announced via Twitter Tuesday that she will not finish the National Women’s Soccer League season with the Seattle Reign. In the tweet, Solo said she is “not there yet” mentally to continue playing for the Reign.
“Coming to terms with the fact that I was fired from the U.S. Women’s National team after 17 years of service has been devastating,” Solo wrote. “After careful consideration, I have decided to end my season with the Seattle Reign, an organization I love playing for.
“Mentally, I am not there yet. After watching the team’s win against (Portland Thorns FC) this weekend and seeing (backup GK) Haley Kopmeyer playing so well in goal, I truly believe this decision is what’s best for me and for the Reign organization.”
Reign coach Laura Harvey responded through the club’s Twitter account.
“While disappointed that Hope will not return to Reign FC this season, we understand and respect her decision not to return,” Harvey. “Hope has always wanted what is best for our team. She demands from herself nothing less than excellence on the pitch.”
Solo’s suspension came as a result of comments she made after the United States lost on penalties to eventual silver-medalist Sweden in the quarterfinals, the worst finish at the Olympics by the USWNT.
Sweden spent a large portion of the game in a defensive shell that the U.S. was unable to break down. After the game, Solo expressed said that she felt the tactics the Swedes used made them “a bunch of cowards.”
The Reign are fifth in the NWSL with 23 points and four games to play. The top four teams in the league qualify for the playoffs. Seattle has been to the final the past two years, and lost on both occasions.
At the time of Solo’s decision, she was tied for the league lead in clean sheets with five shutouts.

Most likely she has better options than sticking around. Best of luck to her.
Solo:. “Mentally, I am not there yet.” Yep…many have been saying the same thing about her for years.
Time for everyone to move on. A new beginning for everyone.
Good riddance. USWNT should have cut her loose long ago. Athletes charged with domestic violence have no place representing our country. And of course the rest of her classless behavior speaks for itself.
