The University of Washington’s Kelsey Plum Thursday was named the Associated Press women’s college basketball Player of the Year. She is not only the first player in UW history to win that award, but the first in Pac-12 Conference history to claim it. She was selected first-team All-America earlier this week.
The Poway, CA., native received 30 votes from a 33-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Balloting was done before the NCAA Tournament.
A’ja Wilson of South Carolina, Gabby Williams and Katie Lou Samuelson of UConn each received a vote.
Plum is the NCAA’s all-time career leading scorer, ending her career with 3,527 points, including a conference-record 57 against the University of Utah Feb. 25. Plum also became the third player in NCAA history to score more than 1,000 points in a season (1,009) and also broke a 33-year-old NCAA career for free throws made.
Plum averaged 31.7 points per game, tops in the NCAA. She is also a finalist for the prestigious Naismith and Wade trophies as the top women’s player, both of which will be presented in the next week.

Plum, by virtue of her records and trophies, is clearly the UW’s #1 athlete ever. She has the hardware to prove it.
