University of Washington football coach Chris Petersen has agreed to a contract extension through 2023 that will reportedly make him the highest-paid coach in the Pac-12 Conference. Petersen, who came to the Huskies three years ago and last year led them to the national semifinals, will receive an average salary of $4.9 million per year.
Petersen collected $3.6 million last year and earned another $1 million in performance bonuses, that according to Sports Illustrated, which first reported the contract was extended. Stanford’s David Shaw had been the highest paid in the Pac-12 at slightly more than $4 million per year.
This marks the second time Petersen has received an extension. In November 2015, he signed a three-year extension that was scheduled to pay him $4 million per year beginning in 2018. Petersen’s original deal, signed in 2013, was for five years and $18 million.
Not only will Petersen get a raise, his assistant coaches will as well. Their extensions are expected to be announced later this week.
