The Mariners Friday activated RHP David Phelps and, to make room on the 25-man roster, optioned RHP Max Povse to AAA Tacoma. Phelps, whom the Mariners acquired Thursday from the Miami Marlins for four minor league prospects, will be available Friday night when Seattle (48-49) plays the second of four against the New York Yankees at Safeco Field.
Phelps, 30, went 2-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 44 appearances with the Marlins this season. Over his last 36 games, he has a 2.19 ERA and a .195 batting average against with 39 strikeouts and 19 walks. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound right-hander had a career-long streak of 20.0 innings pitched without allowing an earned run from April 21-June 7.
The Mariners acquired Phelps in a five-player deal for minor league OF Brayan Hernandez and minor league RHPs Pablo Lopez, Brandon Miller and Lukas Schiraldi.
Over parts of six MLB seasons with the Yankees (2012-14) and Marlins (2015-17), he has a career mark of 28-32 with five saves and a 3.90 ERA in 218 games.
Povse, 23, allowed two unearned runs in one inning of relief work Thursday night vs. the Yankees after being recalled from Tacoma earlier Thursday. He has posted a 7.36 ERA in three relief appearances with the Mariners this season.
RHP Andrew Moore (1-1, 5.25) will throw for the Mariners Friday night opposite LHP CC Sabathia (8-3, 3.34). First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m., PT.
