The Mariners Friday made a spree of additions as MLB rosters expanded, reinstating OF Jarrod Dyson and RHP Shae Simmons from the disabled list while recalling RHPs Dan Altavilla, Ryan Garton and Andrew Moore from AAA Tacoma.
Seattle also added RHP Mike Leake to the active roster, selected C Mike Marjama from the Rainiers, outrighted RHP Christian Bergman to the Rainiers, placed RHP David Phelps on the 10-day DL (right elbow impingement) and waived RHP Sam Gaviglio.
Leake, acquired Wednesday from St. Louis, was to make his Seattle debut against the Oakland Athletics Friday as the Mariners launch a nine-game home stand. Dyson, Simmons, Altavilla, Garton, Moore and Marjama were available for the first of three against the Athletics.
The Mariners acquired Leake, 29, with cash considerations and international slot money in exchange for minor league infielder Rayder Ascanio Wednesday. He went 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA in 26 starts for St. Louis this season. In his first 16 starts he was 6-6, with a 2.97 ERA before backsliding to 1-6, 6.94 ERA over his last 10.
Since his MLB debut season in 2010, Leake’s 228 starts are second-most in the National League behind Clayton Kershaw’s 233.
Altavilla, 24, is 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 31 relief appearances with Seattle over four stints this season. He is 1-0 with six saves and a 1.61 ERA in 19 games with Tacoma. The Mariners drafted Altavilla in the fifth round in 2015 out of Mercyhurst (PA.) College.
Dyson, 33, went on the DL with a right groin strain Aug. 19. In 109 games, he is batting .255 with 28 stolen bases. His 28 steals rank T3 in the American League.
Garton, 27, was 2-2 with four saves and a 2.80 ERA with AAA Durham and Tacoma. With the Rainiers, he was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in seven relief appearances. Garton made his MLB debut with Tampa Bay in 2016. In eight MLB seasons, he is 80-76 with a 4.18 ERA.
The Mariners acquired Marjama, 28, along with Garton in exchange for LHP Anthony Misiewicz and INF Luis Rengifo Aug. 6. Since then, he has hit .169 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 21 games with Tacoma. Marjama makes his MLB debut with his first appearance.
Moore, 23, is on his fourth stint with the Mariners.. He is 1-3 with a 6.34 ERA in seven games, including six starts. Moore began the season with AA Arkansas.
Simmons, 26, has made appearances with the AZL Mariners, Arkansas and Tacoma while on a rehab assignment. He was placed on the with a right elbow strain out of spring training. Since joining Tacoma Aug. 4, he has a 3.68 ERA in nine outings.
Phelps, 30, is on his second DL trip, following a similar elbow episode Aug. 8. Since being acquired by the Mariners July 20, he is 2-1 and a 3.12 ERA in 10 relief appearances.
Bergman, 29, was 4-5 with a 5.00 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 13 games, including eight starts, during three stints with Seattle this season.
Gaviglio appeared in 12 games (11 starts) over three stints. He went 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA. The Kansas City Royals claimed Gaviglio shortly after the Mariners waived him.
The Mariners are expected to add more players early next week after Tacoma completes its Pacific Coast League season.
Seattle (66-68) is on a five-game losing streak and 4.5 games behind in the AL wild card race. Leake will oppose Sean Manaea (9-8, 4.55).
