The Seahawks have added another former first-round draft pick. At quarterback.
No, not Rick Mirer or Dan McGwire. But as with those two long-ago Seahawks first-round busts, Paxton Lynch didn’t play last season either.
After sitting out 2017 healthy but jobless, Lynch, taken 26th in the 2016 draft out of Memphis by Denver, was signed Thursday to a futures contract to compete for the job of holding Russell Wilson’s tablet on the sidelines.
Lynch, 25 next month and 6-foot-7 and 244 pounds, was waived by the Broncos at the end of the preseason, unable to beat out Trevor Siemian for the starting position. He also was passed over for the backup job by Chad Kelly, waived in October after being arrested and charged with criminal trespass. Denver had to pay Lynch a guaranteed $8.3 million.
In five games and four starts over two seasons in Denver, Lynch completed 79 of 128 attempts for 792 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed 16 times for 55 yards, always a good thing in the Seahawks plans.
The Seahawks’ backup in 2018, ex-UCLA star Brett Hundley, did not play a snap and will become an unrestricted free agent in March. The Seahawks, who sent a sixth-round draft pick to Green Bay for Hundley, could re-sign him to join the competition behind the NFL’s only quarterback who took his team’s every snap.
The Seahawks had rookie QB Alex McGough on the practice squad in 2018, but he was not re-signed and became a free agent, whereupon he was signed this week by Jacksonville.
Ironically, the pick used by Denver to take Lynch belonged to the Seahawks, who swapped it for Denver’s pick at 31 while picking up a third-rounder that became TE Nick Vannett. The Seahawks then selected RT Germain Ifedi.

Just what we need. Another Lynch in the stew.
Wait . . . brother from a different mother?
Twin sons from different mothers.
Dan Fogelberg would be pleased.
Wait, is Tim Weisberg the new backup QB? I’m so confused.
Would have been less expensive to simply keep Mcgough on. He had a good exhibition season and would have had a year of learning the offense and teammates under his belt.
He wanted to go to a team where he may have a chance to play
McGough likely wanted more reps where the QB wasn’t indestructible.
How does John Elway keep his job?
He won Super Bowls as QB and boss.
He was a great player. He convinced Peyton Manning to play for Denver. Since then….nada.
Body by Fisher, Brain by Mattell. Is that silly ass wearing aviator shades under a helmet? Jesus…does the VMAC have a day care center?
Nothing wrong with cutting edge fashion.
Paxton Lynch wins the Gardner Minshew look alike contest.
Thanks Art.
Not much to get excited about here. It’s too bad that McGough didn’t work out. He looked to fit into the system similar to Russell.
