John Best, the first head coach and an early general manager of the North American Soccer League’s Seattle Sounders, died Sunday in Ireland while visiting family. Best, 74, who was with the Sounders from 1974-76, had a lung infection. He had also battled kidney disease for more than two decades.

Tristan Etienne, a 6-foot-9 freshman forward from Abbotsford, B.C., left the University of Washington basketball program effective immediately. According to a press release issued by the school, Etienne will remain enrolled for fall quarter and will not pursue a transfer at this time.

In a no-surprise development, the Pac-12 Conference Monday named Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday its Offensive Player of the Week after Halliday set an NCAA FBS passing record with 734 yards. The Cougar senior completed 49 of 70 passes with six touchdowns and no interceptions, but WSU lost to California 60-59.
