Tosh Lupoi, the University of Washington assistant football coach who was being pursued to join Steve Sarkisian at USC, is the subject of an investigation by both schools after the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday night that Lupoi gave $4,500 in cash to pay tutoring expenses for a recruit who never qualified for admission.

The Mariners Wednesday re-signed free agent outfielder and former Gold Glove winner (2010) Franklin Gutierrez, six weeks after Seattle declined the club option on his 2014 contract. Multiple reports say the base salary will be $1 million, with incentives based on production that could add up to an additional $2 million.

The Sounders Wednesday selected forwards Chad Barrett and Corey Hertzog in Stage Two of the Major League Soccer re-entry draft. Seattle has rights to both and may negotiate new contracts. The Sounders took Barrett from the New England Revolution and Hertzog from the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Mariners avoided an arbitration fight with Charlie Furbush by agreeing Tuesday to a one-year, $750,000 deal for the lefty reliever. Furbush was on the edge of becoming arbitration eligible by moving into the top 22 percent of service time among players who have at least two years but less than three.
