Kendrys Morales has declined the Mariners’ qualifying offer, according to cbsssports.com baseball reporter Jon Heyman Tuesday. That means that that the designated hitter/first baseman is likely headed to free agency, but does not preclude the Mariners and Morales from reaching a multi-year deal after he surveys the market.

The Mariners Tuesday claimed outfielder Travis Witherspoon off waivers from the Anaheim Angels and made room for him on the 40-man roster by designating catcher Henry Blanco for assignment. Witherspoon, 24, spent the 2013 season at AA Arkansas, where he hit .214 and stole 30 bases in 129 games.

At least Washington’s 31-28 loss at Stanford Saturday night didn’t put a serious dent in the Huskies’ poll standing. Ranked 15th a week ago, UW slipped only a notch to 16th in AP rankings released Sunday. In the USA Today/Coaches poll, Washington actually moved up one spot, from 20 to 19.

Hours after suffering a 5-1 shellacking in Colorado, the Sounders learned that midfielder Brad Evans and forward Eddie Johnson were called into the U.S. Men’s National Team for  FIFA World Cup qualifiers matches against Jamaica and Panama. However, the U.S. team captain, Clint Dempsey, nursing a hamstring injury, was not called.
