After splitting four games with the San Diego Padres, the Mariners begin a three-game series at Target Field in Minnesota Friday against the Twins.
Felix Hernandez, who had two losses and a no-decision in his three previous starts, found his “ace” form in San Diego Thursday. Aided by a season-high five home runs, including the first two of Nick Franklin’s major league career, Hernandez blew through the Padres, winning 7-1, as Seattle snapped a two-game losing streak.
The Washington Huskies football team took a hit with news that wide receiver James Johnson has retired from football due to a lingering wrist injury suffered last fall. Johnson, who would have been a fifth-year senior, will remain on scholarship until he completes his degree.

The Seattle Sounders entered their Wednesday night U.S. Open match against the Tampa Bay Rowdies short-handed. They came away from St. Petersburg, FL., empty-handed, dropping a 1-0 decision that eliminated them from Open Cup competition to the lower-tier, North American Soccer League team at windy Al Lang Stadium.
The Mariners, as expected, optioned struggling rookie starter Brandon Maurer to AAA Tacoma Thursday, a day after a shelling administered by San Diego. At the same time, the Mariners recalled infielder Alex Liddi from the Rainiers. He was available for Wednesday’s game at Petco Park.
